Five stages of EAF steelmaking process

矿热炉

Scrap steel is the main raw material of electric arc furnace steelmaking. The quality of scrap steel directly affects the quality and cost of steel and the productivity of electric arc furnace. Therefore, there are several requirements for scrap steel:

(1) The surface of scrap steel shall be clean and free of rust, because the impurities such as sediment in scrap steel will reduce the conductivity of furnace charge, prolong the melting time, affect the dephosphorization effect in the oxidation stage and erode the furnace lining. When the scrap steel is seriously rusted or contaminated with oil, the output of steel and alloy elements will decrease and the hydrogen content in steel will increase.

(2) Non ferrous metals such as lead, tin, arsenic, zinc and copper shall not be mixed in the scrap. Lead has high density, low melting point, insoluble in molten steel, easy to deposit in the gap at the bottom of the furnace, resulting in steel leakage accident. Tin, arsenic and copper are easy to cause thermal brittleness of steel.

(3) Sealed containers, inflammable, explosive and toxic substances shall not be mixed into scrap to ensure safe production.

(4) The chemical composition of scrap steel should be clear, and the content of sulfur and phosphorus should not be too high.

(5) The overall dimension of scrap steel should not be too large (the cross-sectional area should not exceed 150 mm, 150 mm, and the large length should not exceed 350 mm). Electric arc furnace steelmaking generally uses pig iron to improve the carbon content of the charge, which usually does not exceed 30% of the charge.
